Watching IPTV on Popular US TV Brands: Samsung, LG, TCL, Hisense and Sony

Your TV brand decides which smart platform you get, and that platform decides which IPTV player apps you can install. Samsung, LG, TCL, Hisense and Sony are among the brands found in many US living rooms, and each handles apps a little differently. This guide explains what to expect from each and when a plug-in streaming device is the simpler choice.

In short
  • IPTV runs inside a player app, so what matters is your TV’s app store.
  • Google TV models usually have the widest choice of players.
  • Samsung and LG have their own platforms with a narrower selection.
  • If your TV’s store falls short, a streaming stick in an HDMI port solves it.

Why the platform matters more than the brand

An IPTV service gives you a login, either an Xtream Codes account (server, username and password) or a playlist link. You enter it into a player app. So the key question is not which brand you own but which platform it runs, and whether that platform’s app store offers a player that supports Xtream Codes or M3U playlists. The same brand can sell models on different platforms, so check the home screen of your own TV.

Samsung

Samsung smart TVs run Tizen, Samsung’s own platform with its own app store.

  • Apps: a selection of IPTV players is available, but it varies by country and TV year. Some use an activation code or charge a yearly fee to their developer.
  • Older models: may have fewer apps or outdated versions.
  • Picture: Samsung TVs support HDR10 and HDR10+, but not Dolby Vision.

Our Samsung setup guide walks through the steps.

LG

LG smart TVs run webOS, which also has its own app store.

  • Apps: as with Samsung, a smaller selection of IPTV players than on Google TV, varying by region and model year.
  • Interface: the Magic Remote’s pointer makes typing server addresses easier than on many TVs.
  • Picture: many LG models support Dolby Vision as well as HDR10.

Our LG setup guide covers installation and login.

TCL

TCL sells TVs on more than one platform in the US, and many recent models run Google TV.

  • Google TV models: you get the Google Play Store, which usually has a wide choice of IPTV players.
  • Other platforms: check the home screen to see which system your model uses, as app choice differs.
  • Performance: budget models may have less memory and a slower processor, which can make large channel lists sluggish.

Hisense

Hisense also sells TVs on several platforms, including its own VIDAA system and Google TV on some models.

  • Google TV models: setup works like any Android-based device, with the Google Play Store.
  • VIDAA models: the app store has fewer IPTV players and varies by country.

Our Hisense setup guide explains how to tell which system you have and what to do next.

Sony

Most recent Sony TVs run Google TV, and older models run Android TV.

  • Apps: the Google Play Store offers a wide choice of IPTV players.
  • Picture: many Sony models support Dolby Vision as well as HDR10.
  • Setup: follows the same steps as an Android TV box. See our Android TV guide.

When to add a streaming device

A plug-in streaming device is often the simplest route, even on a capable smart TV. Consider one if:

  • You cannot find a suitable player in your TV’s app store.
  • Your TV’s apps are slow or no longer receive updates.
  • You want the same app and interface on every TV in the house.
  • Your TV is older but still has a good picture.

Fire TV, Google TV and Apple TV devices all run IPTV players. Our comparison of smart TV apps vs streaming sticks covers the trade-offs, and our guide to the best streaming device for 4K IPTV helps you choose one.

Buying a new TV with IPTV in mind

If you are shopping for a TV and plan to use IPTV, a few checks help. Look at which platform the exact model runs, since the same brand may sell different platforms at different prices. Check the HDR formats it supports and whether it has an Ethernet port. Reviews that mention app speed and menu responsiveness are useful too, as a slow interface makes browsing large channel lists tedious. If the built-in platform is limited, budget for a streaming stick alongside the TV.

Picture quality on any brand

8K IPTV Streaming is 4K and 8K-ready: each stream plays at the quality its source provides. Many live channels are HD, some are 4K, and native 8K content is rare. A 4K or 8K TV upscales lower-resolution streams to fill the screen, and the quality of that upscaling varies by brand and model. For a natural picture, choose Movie or Filmmaker Mode and adjust motion settings for sport.
