An IPTV player that closes, freezes or returns to the home screen is usually struggling with memory, storage, outdated software or a setting that does not suit the device. These problems are rarely permanent. This guide gives general fixes first, then steps for Fire TV, Android and Google TV, Apple TV and Samsung and LG smart TVs.
- Restart the device fully, not just the app.
- Free up storage and clear the app’s cache.
- Update the player app and the device software.
- Switch decoder mode and reduce the size of the channel list.
General fixes for every device
1. Fully restart the device
Many devices do not shut down when you press the power button; they go to sleep. Use the restart option in settings, or unplug the device for 30 seconds. This clears memory and stops background apps.
2. Check free storage
Player apps store channel lists, logos and guide data. When storage is nearly full, apps crash. Remove apps you no longer use and clear cached data. Streaming sticks with small storage are especially prone to this after a few updates.
3. Update the app and device
Bugs that cause crashes are often fixed in updates. Check for updates to both the player app and the device’s system software.
4. Try a different decoder setting
Most players offer hardware and software decoding. Hardware is usually best, but if crashes happen on certain channels, switching modes can reveal whether decoding is the cause. Our explainer on video codecs covers why this matters.
5. Reduce the channel list
Very large playlists and guides use a lot of memory. Hide channel groups you do not watch. Our guide to favorites and channel groups shows how.
6. Reinstall the app
If nothing helps, uninstall the player, restart the device and install it again. You will need to re-enter your login details and rebuild favorites unless the app has a backup feature.
Fire TV
- Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.
- Select the player, then choose Force stop and Clear cache.
- Check free space under Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage.
- Restart from Settings > My Fire TV > Restart.
Fire TV sticks have limited storage, so removing unused apps often makes a big difference. If you installed the player with Downloader, delete the installer file afterwards. See our Fire TV setup guide for more.
Android TV and Google TV
- Open Settings > Apps and select the player.
- Choose Force stop, then Clear cache.
- If problems continue, choose Clear data (this removes settings and login).
- Check storage under Settings > System > Storage.
Budget Android boxes sometimes have less memory than advertised performance suggests. If crashes continue after these steps, a lighter player app or a faster device may be needed. Our Android TV box guide has more tips.
Apple TV
- Double-press the TV button to open the app switcher and swipe the player away.
- Restart from Settings > System > Restart.
- Check for tvOS updates under Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Delete and reinstall the player from the App Store if needed.
Apple TV offloads unused apps when storage is low, which can remove cached guide data. Our Apple devices guide covers setup.
Samsung and LG smart TVs
- Hold the power button on the remote until the TV restarts, or unplug the TV for a minute.
- On Samsung, use Settings > Support > Device Care to clear memory and check storage.
- On LG, close apps from the recent apps list and check for webOS updates.
- Uninstall and reinstall the player from the TV’s app store.
Smart TVs have less memory than many streaming devices. If crashes persist, an external streaming stick is often the simplest fix. See our Samsung TV guide and the full list of options on our devices page.
When the crash happens on specific channels
If the app closes only when you open certain channels, the stream format may not suit your decoder setting. Switch decoder modes and try again. If it continues, send us the channel name on WhatsApp so we can check.
When the crash happens at startup
A crash on launch often means corrupted app data or a failed update. Clear the app’s data or reinstall it. If it crashes while loading the guide, try disabling the EPG temporarily, then re-enable it after the channel list loads.
When the device gets hot
Streaming sticks tucked behind a wall-mounted TV can run hot, especially during long 4K sessions. Overheating makes devices slow down, freeze or restart. If the stick feels very warm, use the short HDMI extension cable that often comes in the box to move it away from the TV’s vents, or reposition it where air can circulate. Use the power adapter supplied with the device rather than a TV USB port, which may not supply enough power.
Prevent future crashes
- Restart the device every week or two.
- Keep at least a few gigabytes of storage free.
- Keep automatic updates on.
- Hide unused channel groups.
- Avoid running several heavy apps at the same time.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my IPTV app keep closing on Fire TV?
The most common causes are low storage, a full cache or an outdated app. Clear the cache, remove unused apps, update the player and restart the device.
Will clearing data delete my account?
No. Clearing data only removes the app’s local settings, login and favorites on that device. Your account is unaffected; just log in again.
Should I try a different player?
If crashes continue after updates and a reinstall, yes. Some players are lighter and better suited to devices with limited memory.
App still crashing?
Tell us your device and player app on WhatsApp. We will suggest the next step or a better-suited player.
